WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference recognized George Washington junior Cece Smith as its Under Armour Softball Player of the Week. Loyola Chicago freshman Anna Kiel was named Pitcher of the Week, while George Mason freshman Alyssa Hopkins earned Rookie of the Week honors. The league announced the awards on Tuesday for games played from April 20 to April 26.
Smith put together an elite two-way weekend, leading the Revolutionaries on the mound and in the batter’s box. Offensively, the Atlanta native slashed .700/.727/1.000 to help lead George Washington to a series win over Rhode Island, racking up seven hits, seven RBIs, and three doubles. Smith also tossed 9.1 innings across two appearances, allowing a 1.50 ERA while striking out six batters.
Kiel put together a tremendous weekend for Loyola Chicago, helping the Ramblers clinch their first-ever A-10 regular season title. The first-year pitcher from South Elgin, Ill., contributed 8.2 innings on the mound, allowing just one run for a 0.81 ERA and totaled eight strikeouts.
Hopkins started all five games for George Mason last week, producing a slash line of .667/.706/1.000. The Louisa, Va. native tallied 10 hits in 15 at-bats, scoring four runs and launching one home run against the Ramblers --- the only run Kiel gave up on the mound last week.
