VCU baseball limited one of the nation's top-scoring offenses to just two runs at The Diamond on Tuesday evening, taking down nationally-ranked No. 9 Virginia, 6-2, to earn the first top-25 victory under Head Coach Sean Thompson.
 
LEADING OFF:

• The Rams' Tuesday win marks the seventh top-10 win and the sixth highest-ranked win in program history
• VCU is just the fourth team to hold Virginia to two or fewer runs this season. UVA's offense ranks eighth nationally in runs and 15^th in runs per game
• The Rams pitching staff combined to strand 16 Cavaliers on base
• Dawson Newman was the pitcher of record for VCU, tossing two scoreless innings to secure his third win as a Ram
• Zach Peters recorded the final out for the third time in the last four games, extending his streak to 12 appearances without an earned run allowed
• Graduate right-hander Fenix DiGiacomo made his return to the mound, tossing the first inning in his first outing since March 6
• The Rams' defense turned a season-high three double plays
• Michael Petite launched his team-leading 11^th home run, becoming just the 17^th Ram to hit have 11+ homers in a single season
• Eight of the Rams' nine starters tallied a hit in the game, with Trent Adelman leading with a 2-3 performance
• Virginia outhit VCU 12-9, led by Harrison Didawick's three

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Virginia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff home run by AJ Gracia, breaking the Rams' streak of 22 innings without trailing
• Out of the bullpen, Newman, Nick Frers and Cade Dressler combined for six scoreless frames, as the Rams slowly worked up a five-run lead
• Adelman drove in VCU's tying run on an RBI single in the second inning, before a passed ball and RBI groundout from Teige Lethert scored a pair in the third
• Petite's towering 424-foot home run added one more in the fifth frame, and VCU concluded its scoring with five consecutive hits to open the sixth inning for a pair of runs and a 6-1 Rams lead
• Gracia again produced a run for Viginia in the eighth inning, singling in the game's final run before Peters slammed the door on VCU's midweek win, 6-2
