WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton junior Michael Smith Jr. and Saint Joseph’s sophomore Blake Primrose as its Under Armour Baseball Co-Players of the Week. Saint Joseph’s senior Cole Fehrman was named Pitcher of the Week and Dayton freshman Jason Bello captured Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played from April 27 – May 3.
Smith put together a dominant week for the Flyers, batting 7-for-16 with a double and three home runs in Dayton’s 4-1 week, including two grand slams. The outfielder from Pensacola, Fla. racked up 14 RBIs and 11 runs, including an eight-RBI performance in the first game of a conference series against La Salle. Smith finished the weekend with three hits in the series finale, recording five runs, five RBI and two stolen bases.
Nothing could slow Primrose, who recorded a .643/.700/1.571 slash line last week with nine hits, four home runs, 10 runs, and 10 RBIs in four games last week. The catcher from Pittsburgh recorded five RBIs in the Hawks’ series opener against St. Bonaventure, hitting two home runs in the process. He contributed multiple hits in each of Saint Joseph’s four matchups, capped off by a three-hit showing in the final game of the series.
Fehrman produced a gem, shutting out St. Bonaventure with 8.0 innings of scoreless pitching. The Doylestown, Pa. native retired the first nine batters of the game and later send down the final 10 batters he faced, allowing just two hits on the day and zero walks. Fehrman racked up 13 strikeouts, leading the Hawks to a 3-0 win over the Bonnies.
Bello showed off his power last week, unleashing four home runs across four games to go with a double. The infielder from Fort Myers, Fla. logged three RBIs and a homer in a midweek matchup with Akron, sending one over the fence in the Flyers’ first game against La Salle. After recording another hit in game two, Bello crushed two home runs in the series finale to drive in three RBIs.
