NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Atlantic 10 Conference has named La Salle’s Nathan Gillis and Rhode Island’s Lotte Black Men’s and Women’s Track Performers of the Week, while George Mason’s Benjamin Viau and Massachusetts’ Jada Harris took Men’s and Women’s Field Performer of the Week. Davidson’s Bryce Anthony and George Mason’s Vilde Vage Henriksen were named Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. The awards are for events completed Jan. 27- Feb. 2.
Gillis edged out teammate Anthony Hawthorne for the 800-meter title at the Penn State National Open over the weekend to pick up his second straight win of the year. The redshirt senior from Oxford, UK, finished in 1:49.97, which is the fastest 800-meter time in the A-10 this season.
Black, a graduate student from Ambler, Pa., won the 1,000 meter for the second straight year at the New England Indoor Championship this past weekend. Her time of 2:44.74 was both a meet and school record, and is Black's seventh program record in the last two seasons. The finish sits second in the NCAA.
At the Crimson Elite Invite on Friday, Viau broke his own school record in the weight throw with a career-best toss of 19.27 meters for first place in the event. The mark ranks first in the A-10 and 57th in the NCAA. The junior from Lititz, Pa., also added a first-place mark of 18.67m in the weight throw at the Scarlet & White Invitational on Saturday.
Harris took home two medals and scored in three events to help UMass take third out of 24 schools at the New England Championships. The senior from Bridgeport, Conn., won gold in high jump, clearing 5 feet 9.75 inches for her first indoor New England title of her career. She earned silver in 60 meter hurdles at 8.49 seconds and also scored in long jump, leaping 18 feet, 9.25 inches for fifth, a personal-best which ranks fourth in the A-10 this season.
Anthony, a Greensboro, N.C., product, won the 60-meter hurdles at the JDL Mondo College Invitational Sunday, stopping the clock in 8.25 seconds, his second win of the season.
Henriksen, from Haugesund, Norway, ran a 4:48.87 mile at the Scarlet & White Invitational, which ranks as the second-fastest time in Mason indoor history. The mark also ranks second in the A-10 and 63rd in the NCAA. She finished 10th in the event.
