NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- La Salle’s Nathan Gillis and Rhode Island’s Kristina MacLure have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s and Women’s Track Performers of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. George Mason’s Jaylen Simmons earned his second consecutive Men’s Field Performer of the Week title, while VCU’s Aliyah Newman took Women’s Field Performer honors. Davidson’s Bryce Anthony and George Mason’s Vilde Vage Henriksen earned Men’s and Women’s Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards are for events completed Jan. 13-19.
Gillis, a redshirt senior from Oxford, UK, started off his indoor season with a bang, winning the 800 meters in his season debut at the Penn 8-Team Select on Saturday. He was the first to cross among 42 finishers with a time of 1:51.55, which is currently the fastest 800-meter time in the A-10 this season.
MacLure had two individual wins this past weekend at the annual Sorlien Memorial Invite. The senior from Stow, Massachusetts, finished first in the 60 meters at 7.61 seconds and 60 meter hurdles at 8.61 seconds. She has the top A-10 time in the 60 meters and is tied for the top time in the 60 meter hurdles. She was also a member of the first-place 4x400 meter relay that finished with a time of 3:51.55.
Simmons set a facility record in the shot put with a personal-best toss of 18.14 meters at the Keydet Invitational. His first-place throw ranks first in the A-10 and 31st in the NCAA this season. The junior from Waynesboro, Va., added a fifth-place finish in the weight throw with a personal-best toss of 18.16 meters.
Newman, a junior from Chesterfield, Va., sits atop the Atlantic 10 in the triple jump after posting a mark of 12.14 meters at the Virginia Tech Invitational last weekend.
Anthony, a Greensboro, N.C., product won the 60-meter hurdles and set a new school record with a time of 8.20 seconds at the JDL January College Kick-off Sunday.
A freshman from Haugesund, Norway, Henriksen notched a second-place finish in the 1000-meter run at the Keydet Invitational. Her time of 2:52.86 ranks second in the A-10, behind teammate Ashley Lewis.
