ORLANDO, Fla. – Eighth-seeded Duquesne defeated No. 9 Saint Joseph’s 4-1 while No. 5 George Washington beat No. 12 St. Bonaventure 4-0 in the first round of the 2019 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship at the USTA National Campus Thursday.
Duquesne advances to face top-seeded VCU Friday at 9:00 am, while GW will play No. 4 Dayton, also Friday at 9:00 am.
The Dukes opened the scoring by winning the doubles point thanks to victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Jared Isaacs/Alex Mascioli won 6-2 at No. 1 over Saint Joseph’s team of Dan Tan and Beekman Schaeffer while Dane Bendel and Alejandro Rodriguez-Vidal won 6-4 over SJU’s Andre Fick and John Massart at No. 3.
Rodriguez-Vidal earned the first singles win for the Dukes, defeating Fick 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2. Nathan Perrone then earned the Hawks first point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles over Chris Corrao. But wins at No. 5 by Isaacs and No. 6 by Joey Matthews gave Duquesne the match. Isaacs beat Tan at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2 while Matthews defeated Schaeffer 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6.
George Washington won the double points by capturing No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The duo of Jakub Behun and Lawrence Sciglitano defeated SBU’s Marco Rivolo and John Rutkowski, 6-1 at No 2 doubles. GW’s Hanyu Liu and Ryan Navarro then secured the doubles point for the Colonials with a 6-1 win over Logan D’Angelo and Martin Estevarena at No. 3.
GW closed out the win with a trio of singles victories, starting with 1. Zicheng Zeng’s 6-3, 6-0 win over Indra Patwardhan at No. 1. Ben Barnett followed with a victory at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2 over Lukas Malmberg. Sciglitano then clinched the match with hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win over Marco Rivolo at No. 5 singles.
