Richmond’s Sofia Maria Barbulescu Wins A10 Women’s Tennis Masters Singles Title; VCU Pair Earns Doubles Crown

DAVIDSON – Richmond’s Sofia Maria Barbulescu won the Atlantic 10 individual women's Masters tournament singles title on Sunday at Davidson College, as VCU tandem Tania Isabel Andrade Sabando and Andrea Magallanes captured the doubles title.
 
The three student-athletes advance in their respective categories to the ITA Conference Masters as Atlantic 10 representatives, with an opportunity to reach the NCAA Individual Championship. The tournament marked the third year of the individual Masters event.
 
After an opening bye as the event’s top seed, Barbulescu took down VCU’s Mariam Ibrahim 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals before beating Charlotte Calderwood 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the semifinals. Rallying from a set down, Barbulescu defeated Rhode Island first-year Iben Mol 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the tournament final.
 
Sabando and Magallanes earned an 8-4 victory over Saint Joseph’s Victoria Tracey and Elena Fleming, followed by another 8-4 triumph in the semifinals against Rhode Island’s Mol and Grace Darcy. Playing a full best-of-three-set match in the final, the VCU pair cruised past Fordham’s Paola Dalmonico and Julianne Nguyen 6-1, 6-0.
 
The ITA Conference Masters Championships will take place November 5-8, 2026 at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga.
