Duquesne, Dayton Hold Off Late Comebacks, Advance to A-10 Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The fifth-seeded Duquesne Dukes (12-8)  survived a late surge from No. 11 Saint Joseph's (5-9), 4-3, in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship at Boar's Head on Thursday. 

The Dukes took an early lead in doubles play, winning on courts one and two. Kylie Isaacs and Sarah Shasura first defeated Aurora Davis and Alex Zachem, 8-2, before Chandler Consonery and Alexa Miller took an 8-4 decision over Claire Minnoe and Maureen Devlin.

Duquesne continued rolling, posting straight set wins by Alexa Miller (6-2, 6-1) and Ally Miller (6-1, 6-2). With the match on the line, Saint Joseph's Aurora Davis and Alex Zachem battled back from second-set losses to cut the lead to one. 

SJU's Maureen Devlin completed the comeback for the Hawks, evening the match with a three-set victory over Spencer Caravaggio (6-4, 2-6, 6-2). 

In a match that lasted nearly three hours, Maddy Adams (DUQ) and Kristina Eisenbrand (SJU) battled for the final set. Adams clinched the set, 7-5, and the match for the Dukes, 4-3. 

The Dukes advance to face No. 3 Massachusetts in the quarterfinals Friday at 1:30 pm

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The tenth-seeded Flyers (9-9) defeated seventh-seeded Saint Louis (10-6) in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Championship Thursday at Boar's Head Sports Club. The Flyers will face second-seed, Richmond, in the quarterfinals on Friday at 1:30 pm. 

Dayton and Saint Louis swapped doubles matches on courts two and three before Marlys Bridgham and Mandy Marchant defeated Aspen Cervin and Madison Cook in the tiebreak, 8-7(5). 

Dayton's Jackie Kawamoto won 6-0, 6-2 over Natalia Yacaman at No. 3 singles, but the Billikens got a point back at No. 5 singles when Brooke Urzendowski beat Marchant 6-4, 6-2.  Cook then drew the match even at two points apiece with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 win over Carly Peck at No. 4 singles.

SLU took a 3-2 lead on a win at No. 6 singles by Jade Kawamoto, but Dayton tied it again with Cervin's win at No. 1 singles over Brdigham that needed a third-set tiebreak (6-2, 4-6, 7-6(6)) to decide the outcome.

A third-set tiebreak was also needed to win the match. The Flyers clinched the victory at No. 2 singles when Alex Townsend defeated Kelsey King 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8).
