LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A) has announced the recipients of the 2026 Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award. University of Dayton cross-country standout Owen Pukys was one of five student-athletes nationwide honored at the 2026 NACDA & Affiliates Convention in Las Vegas. This distinguished award honors student-athletes who have overcome significant personal, academic, and/or emotional challenges to achieve academic success while competing in intercollegiate athletics. The recipients exemplify the true spirit of perseverance, determination, and resilience.
In August 2024, Pukys was diagnosed with mononucleosis, which quickly developed into a life-threatening illness. His roommate, Noah Clemens, found him unconscious in their apartment. Pukys had a 108-degree fever, fell into a coma, and suffered irreversible nerve damage. After emerging from the coma, Pukys spent nearly a month in and out of the hospital.
His recovery began with simple goals of taking a few steps and eventually walking 100 feet. The Louisville, Ohio native took on a mentally-taxing recovery from PTSD and nerve damage, extending through December. He missed his entire junior season and was told he would likely never run competitively again.
One year later, Pukys authored one of the most remarkable comeback stories in program history. During the 2025 cross country season, he became the only man in school history to break 24 minutes in the 8K, accomplishing that feat twice. He won his first collegiate race, finished third at the Atlantic 10 Championships while still managing nerve damage, and was named to the A-10 All-Academic Team.Pukys graduated from UD this spring with a degree in computer science and has earned a place on the Duke men's cross-country team, where he will pursue a master's degree.
Pukys was honored on Monday, at the N4A Convention. The other 2026 Wilma Rudolph Student-Athlete Achievement Award recipients are Ashlee Narker, Iowa State University, Alyssa Dismuke, Tulane University, Kameron Hamilton, Tulane University, and Journey Tucker, University of Arizona.
