WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named La Salle senior Alec Welshans as the Under Armour Baseball Player of the Week. Saint Joseph’s sophomore Matt Fitzgibbon and VCU senior Zach Peters were chosen as the league’s Co-Pitchers of the Week. Davidson freshman Matthew Manjooran earned Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards, the first weekly accolades of the season, were announced Monday and are for games played February 9-15.
 
Welshans hit three home runs in weekend series sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore blasting a home run in each game. The first baseman from Dillsburg, Pa., hit .500 (5-for-10) with a 2.043 OPS, reaching base in more than half (.643) of all plate appearances while also scoring seven runs. On season opening day Friday, Welshans hit La Salle's first home run since the program was discontinued in 2021. His three homers were part of a five-hit weekend in which he also collected six RBI, and two stolen bases three walks and slashed .500 / .643/ 1.400.
 
Fitzgibbon came on in relief in the fifth inning in Saturday's nightcap and held High Point to one hit in three shutout innings. A southpaw from Yonkers, N.Y., fanned seven hitters of the 13 batters he faced, including the final three he faced, which all came with two runners on base.
 
Peters kept intact VCU’s first combined one-hitter since 2019, earning the opening day win in the Rams’ weekend sweep of Holy Cross. The North Haven, Conn., right-hander held the 1-1 tied score through the ninth inning, allowing VCU to walk it off. The senior faced just 12 batters and seven of his nine outs recorded were by strikeout. He tossed 3.0 scoreless innings without giving up a hit, allowing just one of his three total baserunners to advance past first base. 
 
An infielder from Camas, Wash., Manjooran hit. 500 (5-10) with a 1.315 OPS in his collegiate debut. He added two doubles and four RBI. He provided heroics in just his second game, hitting a walk-off RBI-single to deliver an 11-10 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with Bryant.
