WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference tabbed VCU junior Nate Kirkpatrick as its Under Armour Baseball Player of the Week and La Salle junior Titus Shay was named Pitcher of the Week. Richmond freshman Evan Wilson captured Rookie of the Week the league announced on Tuesday. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played from March 16-23.
Kirkpatrick hit the go-ahead home run in the 10th inning that clinched the weekend series with Dayton for VCU. The third baseman from Surrey, British Columbia, had both a home run and two RBI in all three games this weekend, and he tallied at least one hit, run, and RBI in every game. He led VCU with nine hits and a .905 slugging percentage and tied his career-high with four hits on Sunday. Kirkpatrick was a triple away from the cycle on Sunday, going 4-for-6 with a double and home run.
Shay had two perfect outings against Davidson, pitching a total of 4.0 innings with eight strikeouts, no hits no walks and no runs. He had three innings pitched with six strikeouts on Sunday to close out the final three innings of a staff no-hitter versus the Wildcats. The right-handed pitcher from Harrisburg, Pa, has not allowed a hit in 10 2/3 innings pitched this season and has only allowed 1 run (0.84 ERA)
Wilson, a utility player from Lancaster, Pa., split time between designated hitter, left field, first base and right field across the four games, committing no defensive errors. He batted all four games from the leadoff spot and led the team with a slash line of .538/.647/.923 with seven hits, two doubles, a home run, two walks and did not strikeout.
