WASHINGTON — The Atlantic 10 Conference named George Mason junior Deniz Okyay as its Under Armour Men’s Tennis Player of the Week and Patriots freshman Edgar Vilain as its Rookie of the Week. Saint Louis junior Emmerson White was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and VCU freshman Viktoria Lackova earned Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced on Tuesday for matches played from Feb 9-15.
 
Okyay put together a perfect week, winning all four of his matches and leading the Patriots to a pair of victories. Playing the No.1 singles position, Okyay defeated Howard’s Michael Major Jr. 6-4, 7-6 (10-1) on Saturday before besting Villanova’s Cooper Gordon 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 on Sunday. Playing alongside teammate Shari Saeed at the No. 3 doubles position, the Ankara, Turkey native earned a 6-2 doubles win against Howard and 7-6 (7-3) win vs. Villanova.
 
Vilain played a crucial role in both George Mason triumphs, going 4-0 as well. The Oakville, Ontario native defeated Howard’s Marcus Weeke’s 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles position, earning a 6-1 win in doubles alongside Niza Simunyola on Court 2. The pair won again at the same position against Villanova, before Vilain took down Kush Anand at the No. 5 singles slot.
 
White started the week strong, defeating Western Illinois’ Richardlyne Francois 6-1, 6-2 and earning a 6-2 doubles victory alongside Madison Hill. The Oconomowoc, Wis. product continued to shine at the No. 1 singles position, beating Northern Illinois’ Irmak Budak 6-2, 6-3, just the third defeat of Budak’s 11-match season thus far.
 
Lackova continued the strong start to her collegiate career, going 3-1 for VCU. The Bratislava, Slovakia native went 2-0 at the No. 3 doubles position alongside teammate Sara Alba, winning matches against William & Mary and ECU. Lackova added a singles victory on Court 3 against East Carolina, defeating Veronika Pavlenko 6-4, 7-6 (1).
