WASHINGTON — The Atlantic 10 Conference has announced its weekly honors in volleyball. The awards are for games played from October 26-November 1.
Co-Player of the Week: Leyna Nguyen (So., San Jose, Calif.), Loyola Chicago
Co-Player of the Week: Jetta Brenning (So., Powell, Ohio), Saint Louis
Defensive Player of the Week: Brooke Briscoe (Jr., Versailles, Ohio), Davidson
Rookie of the Week: Simone Searles (Fr., Marietta, Ga.), Duquesne
Leyna Nguyen recorded her third straight double-double, her eighth this season, on the road against SLU with 18 kills (on .324 hitting) and a career-best 20 digs. The sophomore then led the Ramblers in kills in both matches against Fordham, recording 12 (on .435 hitting) in match one and 13 in match two. She also totaled three blocks and four aces in three matches across last week. Nguyen currently ranks third in the Atlantic 10 in kills/set (3.63) and fourth in points/set (4.11). She led Loyola to a 3-0 week and kept the Ramblers tied with Dayton atop the A10 standings, both at 11-3.
Jetta Brenning had a historic weekend for Saint Louis at VCU, becoming the first player in program history to have triple-doubles in back-to-back games and just the third in program history to have four or more career triple-doubles. Brenning averaged 9.14 assists, 2.14 digs and 2.07 kills per set, hitting .436 across 14 sets. The sophomore setter picked up her first triple-double on Friday with 48 assists, 11 digs and 10 kills with no errors, hitting .526 and added two aces. On Saturday, she had 44 assists, 10 digs and a career-high 15 kills (hitting .357), adding five block assists and two aces for good measure. The Billikens went 2-1 on the week, with back-to-back five-set comeback wins at VCU after dropping a 3-1 decision to A10 co-leader Loyola Chicago on Tuesday. SLU now has nine conference wins, the most in head coach Andrea Beaty-Cain’s tenure leading the Bills. The history extended to the SLU program, as the weekend sweep over VCU is the first in program history and marked the Billikens’ first win over the Rams since 2021. Saint Louis is alone in third place in the A10 standings with two weekends to play.
Brooke Briscoe earned her third Defensive Player of the Week honor on Monday, after she recorded 74 digs across and had no reception errors on a week when Davidson went a perfect 3-0. The Wildcats junior currently ranks third in the A10 in digs/set (3.84).
Simone Searles averaged 3.79 points, 3.21 kills, 2.43 digs and 1.14 blocks per set, totaling 45 kills, 34 digs and eight total blocks across three matches for the Dukes, earning her sixth Rookie weekly honor this season. She opened the week by recording her 11th double-double of the season, posting 22 kills and 16 digs while hitting .388 in a 3-2 reverse-sweep victory over A10 co-leader Dayton. The freshman also contributed four blocks in the win. Searles followed that up with 10 kills, nine digs and two blocks at Davidson on Saturday before closing the weekend with 13 kills, nine digs and two blocks against the Wildcats on Sunday afternoon.
