WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference recognized Saint Joseph’s graduate student Ava Smith as its Under Armour Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week. Richmond senior Alexa Derr and Davidson freshman Emilia Ostos were named Defensive and Rookie of the Week, respecitvely. The awards were announced on Monday for games played from Sept. 22 to Sept. 28.
Smith, a native of Glasgow, Scotland, scored in each of the Hawks' three games this week. On Wednesday, Smith’s third-quarter goal broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game-winner as Saint Joseph's beat Delaware, 2-1. Against Lehigh, she scored midway through the second quarter as the Hawks routed Lehigh, 6-1. Smith struck in the third quarter again on Sunday as her sixth goal of the season tied the game against Villanova.
Derr, a Palmyra, PA native, was a key part in the Spiders defense this week against La Salle and Temple. She assisted Clara Larripa on a penalty corner. Derr also helped limit the Explorers to six total shots with two on goal and three corners. She also had a defensive save against Temple when the goalkeeper was pulled late in the game.
Ostos, a midfielder from Louisville, KY, scored a goal in Friday’s win over Lock Haven. Davidson defeated Lock Haven 5- 1. Ostos tallied two points on one shot and one goal.
