WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference recognized Richmond junior Davis Wiley as its Under Armour Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while Fordham freshman Jeremy Victoria earned Rookie of the Week. Richmond graduate student Claire Le Du collected Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and Rhode Island freshman Katharina Spieth secured Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Tuesday, are for competitions played from April 14 to April 20.
Wiley extended his win streak to three straight matches in singles this week for the Spiders. On Friday’s match versus Saint Joseph’s Justus Agbo, he commanded a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. In Richmond’s match against Davidson, the Arlington, V.A. native took a 6-3, 6-1 victory versus Uddayvir Singh at No. 1 singles. In doubles play, Wiley teamed with Cole Brashear at the top spot in both matches. Against Saint Joseph’s, the duo trailed 4-5 before the match went unfinished, while Saturday's contest against Davidson was locked at 6-6 when play was halted.
Victoria went 2-0 in singles play, which included winning the clinching point in a 4-3 Fordham win over Saint Joseph’s. He opened the week with a straight set win over Sacred Heart’s Percy Meehan, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. Vicotria then closed out a come from behind win over SJU’s Eli Gan-Dy, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (3). Victoria, a Bronx, N.Y. native, faced a 5-2 deficit in the third set, but rallied back to win.
Le Du secured key wins in singles and doubles action for Richmond. On Friday against Saint Joseph’s, Le Du and her teammate Lainey O’Neil cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles. In singles, Le Du faced SJU’s Victoria Tracey on court three, but the match went unfinished with Le Du leading, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0. The Maisons, France native clinched another doubles win with O’Neil against GW’s Karen Verduzco and Alejandra Ramirez, 6-4. Le Du then captured a 6-3, 6-3 victory on court four.
Spieth won her No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles match in Rhode Island’s meet against Massachusetts. She defeated UMass’ Mariana Campino 7-5, 6-4. She also teamed with Nikki Fernando for a 7-6 (3) win over Campino and Bella Jonglertrakul.
