WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference named Saint Joseph’s freshman Santiago Valle as its Under Armour Men’s Tennis Player of the Week and Davidson freshman Gregorio Hidalgo as its Rookie of the Week. Richmond junior Lara Bakhaya was named Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and VCU freshman Sofia Jane Thorne was named Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Tuesday, are for matches played from April 7 to April 13.
Valle was perfect at No. 3 singles and split his two matchups at No. 2 doubles. Against George Mason, he and his teammate Matthew Dubas teamed up to defeat George Mason’s Jacco Arends and Zavan Fahim, 6-1. Valle then defeated Arends on court three, 6-2, 6-1. Valle defeated Sam Edgar of nationally ranked St. John’s, 6-3, 6-3. He and Dubas lost at No. 2 doubles to Carl Gustavsson and Danilo Raincevic, 4-6.
Hidalgo paced Davidson to a 1-1 week with a win over The Citadel and loss to College of Charleston. He defeated The Citadel’s Reece Beckendorf, 6-4, 6-2 and Charleston’s Eddie Vo, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Hidalgo, a native of Madrid, Spain, was the lone Wildcat to score a team point at Charleston. In doubles, he and partner Nico Pinzon went 1-1. Hidalgo and Pinzon won 6-3 at No. 2 doubles against The Citadel and lost 4-6 at No. 1 doubles against Charleston.
Bakhaya pushed her singles win streak to eight straight matches, which dates to March 22. This week, she helped lead the Spiders to two A-10 wins against VCU and Davidson. Against VCU in doubles, she and Andrea Campodonico defeated VCU’s T. Andrade Sabando and Mariam Ibrahim, 6-1 on the top court. In singles, she secured a 7-5, 6-1 win over VCU’s Mariam Ibrahim on court three. Against Davidson, she and Campodonico won at No. 1 doubles to defeat Davidson’s Kavya Patel and Daniela Porges, 6-3. In singles, the London, England native notched her eighth straight win with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Porges on court three.
Jane Thorne went 2-0 in singles on court one and 1-0 in doubles on court two. She won 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 against Longwood’s Karina Rizvanova. Her and teammate Lea Malazdra went unfinished at No. 2 doubles against Longwood. Jane Thorne, a Northbridge, New South Wales, Australia native, won 7-6 (5-0), 6-4 against Richmond’s Sofia Barbulescu. Her and Malazdra secured a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles against Barbulescu and Elizabeth Novak.
