WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference named Dayton sophomore Mikkel Zinder as its Under Armour Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, while his freshman teammate Sturle Skigelstrand was tabbed as the Rookie of the Week. Fordham junior Nevena Kolarevic was recognized as the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week and Richmond freshman Sofia Barbulescu received Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Tuesday, are for matches played from Feb. 27 to March 2.
Zinder, a Richboro, Pa. native went 3-0 in singles and 3-1 in doubles for Dayton. In No. 2 singles, he defeated Thomas More’s Samuel Mimbrero (6-0, 6-1), Omaha’s Bryan Kuntz (6-3, 6-4) and Kentucky Wesleyan’s Jose Ferrandis (6-0, 6-0). Zinder also led against Southern Indiana when Dayton clinched its victory over Southern Indiana. He added three doubles victories, two at No. 1 with sophomore Eric Suk and one with freshman Alfons Ridstrom. Zinder improved to 11-0 in singles and 8-3 in doubles.
Skigelstrand had a 3-0 performance this week in No. 4 singles and went 4-0 in doubles. The Stavanger, Norway native won decisive victories over Thomas More’s Dason Herrington (6-0, 6-2) and Kentucky Wesleyan’s Miguel Perlaza (6-0, 6-1). Skigelstrand won a thriller against Omaha’s Mikel Garmendia (7-5, 7-6 (4)). He also secured four wins in doubles, two at No. 2 by scores of 6-2 and 6-1, and two at No. 2 by scores of 7-6(3) and 6-2.
Kolarevic went 2-0 in both No.1 singles and No. 1 doubles. She began the weekend with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over George Mason’s Cenan Liu at No. 1 singles. In No. 1 doubles, she partnered with Julianne Nguyen to defeat GM’s Liu and Lauren Splett, 6-2. Kolarevic, a Belgrade, Serbia native, won 6-2, 6-1 over George Washington’s Victoria Sasinka. She also teamed with Nguyen to win first doubles over GW’s Vaida Matuseviciute and Karen Verduzco, 6-1.
Barbulescu was vital for the Spiders’ 2-0 week, which helped the team to two-straight wins over Campbell and East Carolina. In No. 1 singles she defeated Campbell’s Sonia Pieczynska in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Barbulescu teamed with teammate Elizabeth Novak to defeat Campbell’s Jessica Maras and Veronika Prospalova. In No. 1 singles, the Snagov, Romania native picked up a straight-set victory over East Carolina’s Ines Bachir 6-4, 6-0. She also partnered with Novak to win No. 2 doubles over ECU’s Lilly Lancaster and Isabel Rivera Ortiz.
