WASHINGTON -- The Atlantic 10 Conference has selected Saint Joseph's sophomore Owen Petrich as its Baseball Player of the Week. George Washington junior Teddy Brennan was named the Pitcher of the Week. Dayton freshman David Mendez earned this week's Rookie of the Week laurels. The awards were announced Tuesday and are for games played March 11-17.
Petrich became just the third Hawk in program history to hit for the cycle and the first in exactly 22 years when he went 4-for-4 with five runs batted in in a 10-6 win over Monmouth on Saturday. The Doylestown, Pa. native hit safely in all four games last week as the Hawks went 3-1, hitting a solo home run in Tuesday's win at Lehigh and singling in Friday's opener against Monmouth. On Saturday, his two-run first inning triple got SJU on the board early, then he got hit by a pitch in the third, led off the fifth with a single and then hit a three-run home run in the sixth. Leading off the bottom of the eighth, his fly ball to right fell untouched and he slid into second base to pop the confetti on just the third cycle in Saint Joseph's baseball history. The sophomore kept things going on Sunday, driving in three runs and notching a single and two doubles in his first three at bats to reach base in eight consecutive plate appearances across two games. .Petrich finished his week with a .474 / .500 / 1.211 slash line and a 1.711 OPS, going 9-for-19 with three home runs and nine RBIs.
Brennan earned the start for GW in Saturday's contest at Presbyterian and didn't disappoint. In arguably his best outing of the season, Brennan tossed 7.0 innings and only allowed one hit on the day. The Glen Cove, NY native gave up zero earned runs and punched out nine batters in the process. He sat down 19 of the 23 batters he faced, including the first 11 of the game. Opposing batters finished with a .050 average against Brennan, and GW eventually earned the 3-0 win in 11 innings. Brennan is part of a starting rotation that held Presbyterian to just eight hits in three games this weekend, mustering only four runs.
Mendez had tremendous week for the Flyers, hitting .579 with two home runs, a double, eight runs scored and eight RBI. The Aldie, Va. native had an OPS of 1.601 and was 3-for-3 in stolen bases. Mendez had multi-hit performances in four-of-five games on the week, including three-hit games against Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois, where he also reached once via walk. In Dayton’s 17-11 win over EIU, Mendez was on base six times (two hits, three walks, one HBP), scored four runs and drove in three. The freshman is now hitting .481 on the season.
