UMass Wins First A-10 Men's Cross Country Title Since 2008; La Salle's Rowe Sets A-10 Record

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. -- Massachusetts men’s cross country claimed its first Atlantic 10 title since 2008 and its third crown overall Saturday at Pole Green Park. La Salle’s MacCallum Rowe was the individual champion, setting a new league record with a 23:37.9, the fastest time in A-10 Championship history.

UMass scored 36 points, with the five scoring runners all finishing in the top 15 and earning All-Conference. Robert Carew, the Minutemen’s top finisher, placed second overall with a time of 23:44.4, just 7.5 seconds behind Rowe.

Collin Catherwood and Michael Norberg placed fifth and sixth at 24:05.7 and 24:09.5 respectively. John Lucie was ninth overall at 24:13.6 and Liam Ouelette rounded out the UMass top five with a 14th place finish and a time of 24:25.3.

Rowe, the 2022 A-10 Rookie of the Year, earned Most Outstanding Honors with his record-breaking time. His 23:37.9 eclipsed the previous best mark of 23:42.7, set by Penn State’s Jean Pierre Ndayisenga 39 years ago, in 1985.

Loyola Chicago finished second in the team standings, with 50 points, followed by George Mason in third with 102 points. George Washington (108 points) and La Salle (139) completed the top five team scores.

George Mason freshman Tarek Benlamkaddem was named Most Outstanding Rookie, clocking in at 24:31.2 to place 17th overall. Tim Ritchie, the UMass coach earned A-10 Coach of the Year honors for the first time.

In addition to Rowe and the top five UMass runners, Loyola Chicago’s James Lawrence, Miles Clisham and Jake Phillips and Samuel Field all earned All-Conference honors for finishing in the top 15. George Mason’s Wesley Bond, and Alex Deroussel, Michael Bohlke and Jacob Heredia of George Washington and  Rhode Island’s Garrett Hartline also claimed All-Conference accolades.

All Atlantic 10 teams are eligible to compete in NCAA Regionals, which take place at nine sites around the country.
