NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Five-time defending Atlantic 10 women's soccer champion Saint Louis earned recognition as the preseason favorite entering the 2023 campaign, per the league's annual Preseason Poll. Additionally, the conference announced the 11-woman Preseason All-Conference Team on Monday afternoon, just under a week in advance of the season's opening slate of matches set for this upcoming Thursday, Aug. 17.
The A-10 Preseason Poll and Preseason All-Conference team are voted on by the league's head coaches.
The Billikens enter the season a near-unanimous top overall selection in the poll, earning 224 total points behind 14 first-place votes. Returning A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Caroline Kelly along with Midfielder of the Year Abbie Miller pace for veteran corps voted as Preseason All-Conference selections, as the duo is joined by the 2022 first-team choices Emily Gaebe, Emily Groark and Lyndsey Heckel plus second-team pick Emily Puricelli. Saint Louis locked down the program's sixth title last year after composing a dominant 20-2-0 overall mark and perfect 10-0-0 run in A-10 competition, eventually topping second-seeded Dayton in the championship finale, 4-0.
Dayton grabbed the second position on the Preseason Poll, logging 202 total points. The defensive duo of Mackenzie Lutz, a 2022 first-team choice, along with Alicia Donley – good for second-team honors – served as the representation for the Flyers on the Preseason All-Conference team. Dayton concluded this past season as the A-10 runner-up following a successful 16-4-1 (8-2) push, faltering to eventual champion Saint Louis by a 4-0 margin in the title match.
With 199 total points, VCU slotted in at third on the poll, coincidentally scoring a trio of student-athletes on the Preseason All-Conference squad as well in the form of reigning Rookie of the Year Kendyl Sarver along with 2022 All-Conference selections Anna Bagley and Kanna Matsuhisa. The Rams wrapped up the year at 8-3-8 with a 6-1-3 mark in league competition en route to the No. 3 overall seed, dropping their quarterfinals clash against No. 6 Saint Joseph's, 1-0.
Massachusetts slid in at fourth with 173 points and the final first-place vote while Loyola Chicago rounded out the top five with 158 points. Saint Joseph's (134), Duquesne (124) and La Salle (110) claimed sixth, seventh and eighth in the poll with Fordham (97) and Richmond (95) registering positions at ninth and 10th, respectively.
George Washington (88), Davidson (59), Rhode Island (53), George Mason (47) and St. Bonaventure (37) capped the preseason rankings.
The 2023 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer season launches on Thursday, Aug. 17 with all 15 programs getting underway on opening day. Conference play begins on Thursday, Sept. 14 before the league concludes the campaign with the 2023 Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, set for Oct. 27 – Nov. 5 on the campuses of the highest-seeded institutions.
