NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 recognized VCU senior Emmanuel Waller along with Rhode Island senior Trinity Smith as the league’s Men's & Women's Outdoor Track Performers of the Week. George Mason junior Robert Kestyn collected the Men's Field Performer honors while VCU sophomore Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir picked up the Women's Field Performer accolades. Additionally, Massachusetts freshman Godot Gaskins on the men's side and Duquesne freshman Madelyn Moretti for the women notched the Rookie laurels. The awards were announced Tuesday following the conclusion of the fifth week of meets slated between April 10-16.
Waller, a product of Lynchburg, Va., scored 13th place in the 400m hurdles at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational, clocking a 50.91 mark for the new top spot within the league as well as the 25th position on the national leaderboard.
Smith, who hails from Brooklyn, N.Y., posted a silver medal finish in the 100m hurdles – good for a new school record in the event – at the UConn Northeast Challenge before grabbing fourth in the 400m hurdles, the former of which ranks as the top time within the A-10 while the latter slots in at fifth.
Kestyn, a native of Fairfax, Va., put together a solid performance at the Meet of Champions in both the hammer throw and the discus, scoring fourth in the former and second in the latter and moving up into third for both events on the conference performance lists.
A European import out of Hvanneyri, Iceland, Hallgrimsdottir composed a first-place showing in the hammer throw at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitaitonal, logging a 63.96m toss for the top overall position in the league as well as the 20th ranking on the national leaderboard.
Gaskins, a sophomore who hails from Marblehead, Mass., secured the gold in the 400m at the Commonwealth Invitational over the weekend, setting a new UMass school record in the process behind his 46.84 mark and shifting up to No. 1 overall amongst A-10 competition.
Moretti, a product of Madison, Ohio, generated a pair of podium finishes at the CMU Last Chance Meet, initially picking up first in the shot put off a 14.48m throw – good for a new school record as well as second within the A-10 this year – before garnering second in the discus behind a 37.59m launch.
