Ramblers Repeat as Women's Cross Country Champions, Tunnell Claims Individual Title

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Loyola Chicago won its second straight Atlantic 10 Women's Cross Country title Saturday, scoring 65 points with three top-10 finishers. VCU's Lauren Tunnell was the individual champion with a course-record breaking time of 20:50.6. The championship start was delayed by 40 minutes due to a morning thunderstorm over Elvin R. King Cross Country Course.

Tunnell’s time topped the previous record of 21:07.9, set by Ellen Isaac in 2015. Her time also sets an A-10 mark for the fastest 6k A-10 championship performance. Previous championship were run at a distance of 5K. Tunnell is in her first year competing in cross country, and earned both Most Outstanding Performer and Most Outstanding Rookie honors. It’s the first time an individual runner capture both awards since 2014 when La Salle’s Morgan Szekely accomplished the feat, and it’s just the third time in league history a single runner has earned both.
 
The Ramblers Delia McDade Clay placed sixth with a time of 21:15.8 while Grace Kuhn (21:30.4) and Julia Isham (21:32.0) place ninth and 10th for Loyola. All three earned All-Conference, which is awarded to the top 15 finishers.
 
George Washington placed second with 103 points, with Sarah Mitchell finishing seventh with a 21:16.7. Richmond was third with 122 points, paced by Elizabeth Stockman (21:06.7) and Madison Trippett (21:09.4) in fourth and fifth places respectively. Laurel Kurtz also earned All-League honors with an 11th-place finish with 21:33.7. Dayton’s Abby Carter finished second overall with a 21:03.2, leading the Flyers to fourth overall with 143 points. Massachusetts rounded out the top five teams with 145 points. Eugenia Fairhurst was 12th for the Minutewomen, clocking in at 21:35.1.
 
Duquesne was sixth with 160 points and Saint Louis seventh, scoring 162 points. The Billikens’ Sophia Pelligreen (21:38.4) was 13th and McKenna Paulson (21:40.0) 15th, both earning All-Conference accolades. Davidson slotted in at eighth, led by Frances Whitworth’s 21:05.3, which was good for third overall. La Salle was ninth with 213 points and an All-Conference performance by Christine Mancini’s 14th-pkace 21:38.4.
 
Kate O’Neill crossed the finish line at 21:27.2 for George Mason, which was 10th overall with 226 points. Fordham with 11th with 308 points while Rhode Island and VCU tied with 310 points. Saint Joseph’s St. Bonaventure complete the team scoring.
