NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 has named Loyola Chicago graduate student Chris Devaney and VCU sophomore Lauren Tunnell its Men's and Women's Cross Country Performers of the Week, respectively, the leage announced Wednesday. VCU freshman Jacob Barrow and Fordham freshman Meredith Gotzman also earned Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards are for meets run Oct. 9-15.
Devaney led the Rambler men placing 22
nd individually in a stacked field that saw four of the top-five teams in the country, 22 teams ranked in the nation's top-30, and another seven teams receiving votes. The New Plymouth, New Zealand, native clocked an 8k time of 23:53.3 helping the Ramblers upset No. 27 NC State and also beat Portland, Tulsa, Utah State, and Ole Miss who were receiving votes in the poll. It is Devaney's second honor of the season.
Barrow set a new personal best placing 11th in the ECU Pirate Invitational with a 24:36.0 time. The rookie from Greensboro, N.C., helped the Rams to a second-place team finish in the meet.
In a stellar performance, Tunnell set the VCU 6K Women's Cross Country record en route to her third straight first place finish this season. The Midlothian, Va., product set a new personal best and school record in the 6K as VCU finished in the team overall standings. It is Tunnell's second honor of the 2023 season.
Gotzman was Fordham's top finisher at the ECAC Championship, held on October 13
th. The freshman from Olney, Md., placed 86
th overall in a time of 22:33.4 over the 6K course at Van Cortlandt Park. The time was her second-best of the season over a 6K course, having run 22:29.4 at the Jaspers XC Invitational. As a team, Fordham finished 26
th out of 36 teams at the ECAC Championship.
