NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has selected Saint Joseph’s graduate student J.T. Spina as its Golfer of the Week. Richmond freshman Drew Carlin was named the league’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, released Friday, are for tournaments played from Sept. 22-28.
Spina captured his first collegiate medalist honor this past weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational with a two-round four-under score of 140 (71-69). Spina, a native of Schwenksville, Pa., opened the tournament with a one-under-par 71 on Saturday. Entering Sunday's final round tied for second, and only a stroke behind the individual leader, Spina carded a season-best three-under-par 69. The Hawks' graduate student's score of 140 helped him capture the individual title by one stroke over his competition.
Carlin tied for tied for third out of 82 golfers in his collegiate debut, carding a four-under 206 (69-69-68) at the MacDonald Cup at the 6,795-yard Yale Golf Course. The Ashburn, Va., product helped the Spiders to tie for third place in the 11-team field. It was the best finish by a Richmond freshman since 2017 A-10 Championship.
