ORLANDO, Fla. – Top seeded VCU defeated No. 9 St.Bonaventure, 4-0, while No.4 Davidson defeated No.5 Richmond, 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship at the USTA National Campus on Friday.
VCU advances to face No. 4 Davidson in the semifinals Saturday at 10:00 am.
VCU took an early match lead with victories at No.1 and No. 2 doubles. Brothers Charles and Maxence Bertimon won 6-0 at No.1 doubles over Stijn Paardekooper and Marco Rivolo to get things started. Inigo Torre Martin and Rayane Stable defeated Will Schneideman and Luke Reiman at No. 2, 6-3, giving the Rams the early point in the match. On court three, the pair of Joaquim Almeida and Matisse Bobichon were leading 5-3 when the point was called.
The Rams cruised through singles play with Matisse Bobichon putting the Rams on the board first with a win at No. 4, 6-2,6-1 over Norka Sanchez. Rayane Stable followed suit with a victory at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0 over Will Schneideman. Inigo Torrre Martin closed out singles play for VCU with a win at No. 3, 6-2, 6-0 over Marco Rivolo. St. Bonaventure's Paardekooper and Young dropped first sets on courts one and six, respectively, but took second set leads as the match completed.
Richmond's John Walsh and Campbell Erwin struck first in doubles play, taking court No. 2, 6-2. Davidson earned the next court as Udday Singh and Alejandro Solares secured a win at the top spot, 6-4 over Daniel Kliebhan and Josh Keitelman. Just minutes later, 'Cats' pairing of Juan Gongora and Nico Pinzon won at No. 3, 6-4 over Ricky Bell and Alaister Burke, to go up, 1-0 in the match.
Singh set the tone early for the Cats' in singles play with a win at No. 2, 6-1,6-4 over John Walsh, before teammate Brooks Green added to the momentum with a win at No.6 singles, 6-2, 6-2 over Ricky Bell, giving Davidson a 3-0 match lead.
Sebastian Miano got the Spiders on the board, winning 6-0, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
Sam Kavarana held on at No.5 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, making quick work of the final set to clinch the team victory for Davidson.
