ORLANDO, Fla. – Ninth-seeded St.Bonaventure defeated No. 8 George Mason, 4-2, while No. 7 Duquesne defeated No. 10 Fordham, 4-0 in the opening round of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Championship at the USTA National Campus on Thursday.
St. Bonaventure advances to face No. 1 VCU on Friday at 9:00 am. Duquesne will face No. 2 Saint Joseph’s Friday at 11:30 am.
St. Bonaventure set the tone early claiming the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. Stijn Paardekooper and Marco Rivolo won 6-3 at No. 1 over George Mason duo of Rishab Sardana and Faisal Alrebdi, while Jean Marrero and Norka Sanchez won 6-4 over Mason’s Momin Khan and Herman Jentoft at No. 3.
Stijn Paardekooper stamped the first singles win for St.Bonaventure, defeating Rishab Sardan 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1. Will Schneideman then earned the Bonnies another 6-4, 6-1 victory at No.5 singles over Herman Jentoft. Luke Young stamped the match win with a victory over Erick Rivas at No.6, 6-3,6-4.
Duquesne won the double points by capturing wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. The duo of Jin Dassanayake and Joey Mathews defeated Toi Kobayashi and Jofre Segarra 6-4 at No. 2. Liam Wickwire and Tamirlan Teberikov then secured the doubles point for the Dukes with a 7-5 win over Juan Paredes and Nicholas Kanazirev at No. 3.
Duquense closed out the win with a trio of singles victories, starting with Joey Matthews 6-1, 7-6(5) win over Jofre Segarra at No. 6. Alex Mascioli followed with a victory at No. 2 singles 6-2, 7-5 over Giorgio Soemarno. Jin Dassanayake then earned a win at No.5 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 against Nicholas Kanazirev.
