ORLANDO, Fla. – Fourth seeded Davidson defeated No. 13 St.Bonaventure 4-0 while No. 5 George Washington beat No. 12 St. Bonaventure 4-0 in the first round of the 2022 Atlantic 10 Women’s Tennis Championship at the USTA National Campus Wednesday.
Davidson advances to face No.12 Saint Joseph’s Thursday at 11:30 am.
Davidson opened the scoring by winning the doubles point, thanks to victories at No. 2 and No. 3. First, Davidson's pair of Emma Heiderscheit and Franny Shea won 6-2 over Bonnies Paula Velilla and Amelia Haley, before clinching the point behind Mira Gladstone and Elizabeth Truluck victory (6-2) at No. 2 over St. Bonaventure’s team of Alexandra Jansson and Emily Stanley.
Franny Shea earned the first singles point for the Wildcats, defeating Emily Stanley 6-0, 6-2, followed by No. 5. Daniela Porges' 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6 singles over Paula Velilla. Josie Schaffer clinched the victory from the top flight, 7-6, 6-2, securing the 4-0 match win for the 'Cats.
In the other opening match of the day, Dayton secured the double points by capturing No. 3 and No. 2 doubles. The duo of Neena Katauskas and Sarah DeMarco defeated Saint Joseph’s Paige Conrad and Alex Kramer, 6-1 at No. 3, while Elizabeth Hamilton and Paige Kompa then secured the doubles point for the Flyers with a 6-4 win over Anna Kirk and Emily Elliott at No. 2. Saint Joseph’s Amanda Nava and Stow Weiss forced the deciding court, winning for the Hawks, 6-4, at No.1 against Erica Wojcikiewicz and Laura Greb.
In a hard fought match, Saint Joseph’s closed out the win with a quad of singles victories, starting with Fabiana Tort-Umpierre's 6-1,6-1 victory at No. 5 against Paige Kompa. Amanda Nava followed with a victory at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2 over Elizabeth Hamilton to give the Hawks a 2-1 match lead.
Dayton knotted things up with a straight set victory behind Neena Katauskas (6-3, 6-1), before teammate Laura Greb won at No. 4 singles to give the Flyers back the lead, 3-2.
The Hawks flipped the momentum back in their favor as Ireland Amato earned a win at No. 6 7-5, 6-3 victory against Claire Ghidotti to even the match score again.
Weiss then clinched the match in thrilling victory. After taking the first set, 6-4, Weiss dropped the second set 7-6(5). She then forced a third-set tiebreak against Wojcikiewicz 7-6 (3) to claim the 4-3 match victory for the Hawks.
