First Spring Tennis Weekly Awards Announced; VCU & Dayton Honored

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- The Atlantic 10 Conference has named VCU graduate student Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado and freshman teammate Anja Draskovic its Women's Tennis Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively. On the men's side, VCU senior Charles Bertimon earned Performer of the Week honors, while Dayton freshman Eric Perkowski was named Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Tuesday, are the first of the Spring 2022 season and include matches played before Jan. 23.

Diaz-Delgado, ranked no. 61 by ITA, defeated Temple's Stefaniya Surikova 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while also earning a 6-3 doubles victory at No. 2 over Vineetha Mummadi/Veronika Kulhava with her partner Anja Draskovic. Earlier in the season, the Almeria, Spain, product dropped a straight-set match to No. 45 Julia Adams of Furman.

Draskovic earned a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Temple's Yining Tian from court No. 5, pulling away in the second set to clinch the point for VCU. Draskovic also found success in doubles, beating Temple's No. 2 pair, 6-3 with partner Diaz-Delgado. In the opening match against Furman, the Podgorica, Montenegro, product, fell to No. 65 Sara Snyder, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Bertimon, a native of Champagne sur Seine, France, opened the season with a pair of wins in both No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles. Playing with his brother, Maxence, the No. 59th ranked doubles pairing picked up wins against Temple (6-2) and Columbia (6-3). In singles play, Bertimon defeated Leo Raquin (TU) 6-4, 6-4 and Hugo Hashimoto (CU) 6-3, 7-5 as the Rams split the week. 

Perkowski went 5-0 between singles and doubles last week. In doubles action, the rookie from Lincolnshire, Ill., paired with Steven Karl and Connor Bruce for 6-1 victories in a pair of matches against Thomas More University. Perkowski won each of his three singles matches to start the season, first taking a thrilling three-set victory at No. 6 singles versus Alex Wesbrooks of Louisville, before dispatching Xavier's Marco Penelli 7-6, 6-1, also on court six. He moved up to the fourth flight against Alonso DePrada of Thomas More for a straight-sets victory, 6-2, 6-4.
