Rhode Island Men, Women Lead A-10 Indoor Track & Field Championships After Day One

FAIRFAX, Va.— The Rhode Island’s men’s and women’s teams currently lead the 2017 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships after the first day of competition Saturday at George Mason Field House on the campus of George Mason University.

Rhode Island’s men’s team scored 65 points through five events, garnering first, second and third in the weight throw, first in the long jump along with first and second in the pole vault. The Rams are in search of their fourth consecutive A-10 title and sixth championship in the last seven years, and are currently 20 points ahead of second-place George Mason (45). Davidson is currently in third-place with 20 points followed by Saint Louis in fourth with 15 points. Massachusetts and Saint Joseph’s are currently tied for fifth-place with 14 points.

Men’s individual event winners on Saturday were Davidson’s Will Brewster (5,000 meters), George Mason (Distance Medley Relay), and Rhode Island’s Brandon Amo (Weight Throw), Casey Burley (Long Jump) and Ryan Wilkes (Pole Vault).  

Rhode Island’s women’s team also sits atop the standings with 38.5 points after six events on Saturday.  Rhode Island recorded a first-place finish in the long jump along with second and third-place finishes in the pole vault. The Rams are in search of their first league Indoor title since 2005.

Following close behind Rhode Island in the standings is Dayton with 37 points. The Flyers were led on day one with wins in the Weight Throw as well the Pentathlon. In third place is George Mason with 32 points. Duquesne (25) and Richmond (24.5) round out the top five.

Women’s individual event winners on Saturday were Dayton’s Jenni Rossi (Weight Throw) and Sarah Sepanski (Pentathlon), George Mason’s Shelby Garnand (Pole Vault), George Washington’s Miranda DiBiasio (5,000 meters), Rhode Island’s Juleen Lewis (Long Jump) and Richmond (Distance Medley Relay).

The final day of competition is Sunday. Events begin at 9:00 am with the men’s triple jump.
