FAIRFAX, Va. - The VCU Women’s Outdoor Track & Field team captured their first A-10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Sunday at George Mason Stadium on the George Mason campus.
The Rams finished with 131 points en route to their first title. VCU was led by Most Outstanding Track Performer Kia Carson, who recorded first-place finishes in the 100 meters and the 200 meters. VCU also picked up first-place finishes in the 800 meters (Nichelle Scott), triple jump (Carina Peter) and 4 x 100 relay.
George Mason, the defending A-10 Champions, finished second overall with 126 points. The Patriots picked up wins in the 4x400 relay and the high jump (Talisha Watts) and second-place finishes in the 100 meters, 400 meters and triple jump.
Rhode Island was third in the standings with 102.5 points. The Rams were followed by Dayton (94), Massachusetts (82.5), Duquesne (75), Richmond (69.5), Saint Louis (49.5), Saint Joseph’s (49), Davidson (44), La Salle (21), George Washington (11) and Fordham (3).
Dayton’s Jenni Rossi earned Most Outstanding Field Performer of the Year honors after recording first-place finishes in the discus throw (47.74 meters), the hammer throw (54.45 meters) and the shot put (14.91 meters).
Dayton’s Taylor Vernot finished first in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:32.15 and was named the Most Outstanding Rookie Performer of the Year.
VCU’s Jon Riley was named Coach of the Year.
