Rhode Island Men & Women Lead Indoor Track & Field Championships After Day 1

KINGSTON, R.I.— The Rhode Island’s men’s and women’s teams currently lead the 2016 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships after the first day of competition Saturday at Rhode Island’s Mackal Field House.

Rhode Island’s men’s team scored 58 points through five events, garnering first, second and third in the weight throw, first in the long jump, second and third in the pole vault. The Rams are in search of their third consecutive A-10 title and fifth championship in the last six years, and are currently 10.5 points ahead of second-place George Mason (47.5). Massachusetts placed third on the men’s side with 24.5 points, with Davidson (22) and Saint Louis (22) tied for fourth.

Men’s individual event winners on Saturday were Davidson’s Will Brewster (5,000 meters), George Mason’s Logan Besougloff (Pole Vault), Massachusetts (Distance Medley Relay) and Rhode Island’s Casey Burley (Long Jump) and Mahlik Handley (Weight Throw).  

Rhode Island’s women’s team sits atop the standings with 49 points after six events on Saturday. Rhode Island’s Keiko Hector finished first in the pentathlon with 3,695 points. The Rams also recorded a third-place finish in the pentathlon along with a second-place finish in the pole vault and third in the weight throw. The Rhode Island women are in search of their first league title since 2005.

George Mason and Richmond are currently tied for second in the standings with 33 points each. George Mason won both the long jump and the pole vault while Richmond captured first in the 5,000 meters. Rounding out the top five are Massachusetts (32) and Dayton (26).

Women’s individual event winners on Saturday were Dayton’s Jenni Rossi (Weight Throw), George Mason’s Lindsay Horton (Pole Vault) and Chantel Richardson (Long Jump), Massachusetts (Distance Medley Relay), Richmond’s Courtney Thompson (5,000 meters) and Rhode Island’s Keiko Hector (Pentathlon).

The final day of competition will be Sunday. Events begin at 9:00 am with the men’s and women’s high jump finals.
