KINGSTON, R.I.— Junior Brittany Cooper scored with 10 seconds left in double overtime Thursday to send No. 6 George Washington to the semifinals of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship at URI Soccer Complex. Cooper’s goal gave GW a 2-1 win over No. 3 Duquesne in the championship quarterfinals.
The Colonials (11-6-3) will face No. 7 Dayton Friday at 5:00 pm with a bid to the championship final on the line.
Cooper’s goal, which was an unassisted hard shot just over the goalkeeper’s head, erased Duquesne heroics that came late in regulation. With GW winning 1-0, Duquesne’s Cydney Staton dribbled into the box and tied the game with under six minutes to play, forcing the overtime. The Dukes (11-6-3) were living off late goals entering the championship, having scored with four seconds left in double overtime to beat La Salle in their regular season finale.
George Washington had the first goal of the game, a hard shot from the top of the box by MacKenzie Crowley after Ivana Szwejkowski left a well-placed ball. Crowley was looking to pass, but turned and fired a quick shot just under the crossbar in the 71st minute.
GW led in shots 14-11 and Duquesne, the defending A-10 champions made six saves to the Colonials’ four. Corner kicks were even at two apiece.
