KINGSTON, R.I.— Seventh-seeded Dayton used a potent offensive attack to claim a 3-0 upset over second-seeded Saint Louis Thursday at the URI Soccer Complex in the first game of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Women’s Soccer Championship.
The Flyers (7-9-3) advance to Friday’s semifinals at 5:00 pm against the winner of No. 3 Duquesne and No. 6 George Washington. The upset is the eighth straight A-10 women’s soccer championship match when the higher-seeded team did not win. Fordham advanced on a shootout, following a tie in the 2015 semifinals, the only game last year when the higher seed advanced.
Dayton struck 29 minutes into the match when Flyers’ leading scorer Alexis Kiehl tallied her 16th goal from the top left of the box following a pass from Meghan Blank. UD took the 1-0 lead into halftime, and then struck again nine minutes into the second period when Libby Leedom drove a cross from Micayla Livingston past the SLU keeper.
The Flyers added an insurance goal late in the game when Beth Kamphaus scored her first goal of the season. Kiehl set the scoring chance up, putting Kamphaus in position for a one-on-one chance with Billiken netminder Mary Niehaus.
Saint Louis (14-4-2) outshot Dayton 16-12 and had five corner kicks to one by the Flyers, but both keepers made four saves.
