NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The George Washington Colonials, who completed a perfect 10-0 conference slate, nabbed three of the five major Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer honors, the league announced Wednesday. The awards, along with the All-Conference, All-Rookie and All-Academic teams were announced Wednesday ahead of the 2015 Championship.
In her fourth year at the helm for GW, Sarah Barnes has been named the 2015 Coach of Year, after leading the Colonials to an overall record of 15-4 (10-0 A-10) and the nation's longest active winning streak with 13 consecutive victories. Dayton's Ashley Campbell and Nicole Waters were named Offensive and Midfielder of the Year, respectively. George Washington's Brooke Stoller earned Defensive Player of the Year honors, while Colonials teammate, Sofia Pavon was named Rookie of the Year.
The league's head coaches voted on the awards and also selected the 11-member First Team and 11-member Second Team All-Conference, as well as the All-Rookie squad. An 11-member All-Academic team was also selected, based on a vote of the women's soccer media relations directors at each of the 14 member institutions.
Campbell is one of eight Flyers to score at least 20 goals and dish 20 assists in her career, and became just the third Flyer to score 50 goals. Her 61 career goals set a new record at Dayton, and is the second most among active players. The Bradford, Ontario, product earned Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2013, and has been named to All-Conference teams each of her four years. The senior scored three times, leading the Flyers to a 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship title.
Waters earns a second consecutive Midfielder of the Year award, and third straight First-Team nod, and currently leads the nation in assists per game (a category she also led as a sophomore). The Terra Cotta, Ontario, native, has an A-10 leading 17 assists this season, one away from tying UD's single-season record, which she owns. She also owns the Flyer record for career assists (54). The senior midfielder was recently named a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, an award which honors student-athletes with notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Stoller has led GW's back line this season, helping the Colonials to a program-best 12 shutouts and a league-best 0.76 goals against average. The senior from Newton, Mass., has logged more minutes (1601) than any other Colonial and has also chipped in a goal and three assists this season.
Pavon ranks second for GW with 13 points (6g, 1a) on the season, helping the Colonials to a record year. The Chicago, Ill., native has posted four game-winners in 2015, three of which have come against conference opponents. Pavon twice earned A-10 Rookie of the Week Honors this season, and was also named to the All-Conference Second Team.
Barnes has transformed the GW women's soccer program, guiding the squad to its third consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship appearance for the first time since 1998. After winning just one conference match in 2012, Coach Barnes has led the Colonials to a perfect, 10-0-0, conference record this season - the program's first undefeated and untied season of A-10 play - and the first regular season title since 1995.
Joining Campbell, Waters, and Stoller on the All-Conference First Team are Dayton's Alexis Kiehl, Fordham's Jessica Widmann, Massachusetts' Rebekka Sverrisdottir, Saint Joseph's Emily Gingrich, VCU's Sharon Wojcik and GW's MacKenzie Cowley, Emily Brown, Miranda Horn.
