Rhode Island Captures Sixth Straight Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — University of Rhode Island totaled 191 points to win the  2026 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. It's the sixth striaght title for the Rams and 17th overall.

George Mason University finished second with 148 points, followed by Virginia Commonwealth University with 96. Saint Louis University scored 72 points for fourth and La Salle University placed fifth with 68.

Rhode Island’s scoring spanned every event group.

Matthew Santy led the field events. The senior won the long jump at 7.57 meters, breaking the meet record of 7.46 meters set by Xavier Shirley in 2022. Santy added points in additional jump events during the meet and was named Most Outstanding Field Performer.

On the track, Nick Martin accounted for 20 points in the distance events. He won the 5,000 meters in 13:55.10 and added a victory in the 3,000 meters to secure Most Outstanding Track Performer honors. His points extended Rhode Island’s lead entering the final events.

Rhode Island opened the championship with a win in the 60 meters, where Alex Arbogast ran 6.85 for the title. Freshman Lucas Andrade scored in the sprint events, including the hurdles, and was named Most Outstanding Rookie.

In the 200 meters, VCU’s Jude Okafor ran 21.39 to win. Saint Louis’ Sam Lamaze followed with the meet’s only track record in the 400 meters, clocking 47.22 to break the previous meet mark of 47.33 set by Jarrett Young in 2025.

Cristian Cruz of Saint Joseph’s won the 500 meters in 1:03.87. Eli Roth of Davidson captured the 800-meter title. Antonio Capalbo gave Rhode Island another middle-distance win in the 1000 meters.

In the hurdles, Jayden Smith of George Mason won the 60-meter hurdles. George Mason also claimed the pole vault through Walter Bannerman at 5.05 meters. VCU’s Troy McWilliams won the weight throw at 19.83 meters.

La Salle won the distance medley relay in 9:55.03. Rhode Island added the heptathlon title through Wyatt Lamell.

Rhode Island entered the final day in front and closed the meet with 191 points to secure the championship. Head coach Trent Baltzell was named Coach of the Year.
