WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference recognized Saint Louis junior Abby Mallo as its Under Armour Softball Player of the Week. Loyola Chicago senior Peyton Peplowski was named Pitcher of the Week, while Saint Joseph’s freshman Marla Freiwald received Rookie of the Week. The awards were announced on Monday and are for games played from March 31 to April 6.
Across three games, Mallo led the Billikens in batting average (.600), hits (six), RBIs (10), slugging percentage (1.600) and on-base percentage (.600). She was 3-for-6 in a doubleheader sweep of George Washington. Mallo connected with two home runs -- one of which was a grand slam -- and seven RBIs in game two. The Oak Lawn, Ill. native also homered and doubled in a three-hit, three-RBI non-conference game against SIUE.
Pepkowski, who received back-to-back Pitcher of the Week accolades, helped secure the series sweep over St. Bonaventure. In the opening game, she pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout, while striking out a season-high 11 batters. In the closer, Pepkowski tossed a complete-game win and surrendered three runs, one earned, on three hits. Pepkowski escaped a seventh-inning jam after she stranded the tying run with a strikeout. The St. John, Ind. native recorded eight strikeouts in 4-3 Ramblers victory.
Freiwald, a Schuylkill Haven, Penn. native, scattered six hits and struck out four across three appearances for Saint Joseph’s. In the first game against Rhode Island, she tossed a scoreless inning in an 8-7 Hawks win in nine innings. Freiwald surrendered two hits and struck out one in the relief appearance. In the second contest of the doubleheader, she allowed one run in five innings before the game was suspended due to darkness. Freiwald then tossed a scoreless inning with a strikeout the next morning to end the game.
