WASHINGTON -- The Atlantic 10 Conference selected Massachusetts senior Tess Shields as its Women’s Lacrosse Under Armour Offensive Player of the Week, and Saint Joseph's senior Bella Miceli as its Defensive Player of the Week. Rhode Island freshman Sydney MacDonald was named Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Monday, are for games from April 7 - 13.
Shields paced the Minutewomen offensively, recording eight points on four goals and four assists in a dominant 17-7 win over A-10 foe Davidson. The Ipswich, Mass. native added three ground balls and three caused turnovers to help the Minutewomen record their eighth conference win this season and 53rd consecutive in regular season play. Shields is the third different Minutewomen player to earn Offensive Player of the Week honors this season.
Miceli averaged seven draw controls and 2.5 caused turnovers over the week for a 2-0 team record, with wins over Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. The Redding, Conn. native tallied three caused turnovers and four ground balls, recording one draw shy of her career-high with nine draw controls midweek against Duquesne. The senior added two draw controls in the Senior Day win over St. Bonaventure while earning five draws. This is Miceli's second Defensive weekly honor of the season, the first repeat honoree.
MacDonald scored three goals and added an assist on URI’s 2-0 week. The Medford, N.J. native led Rhody with 18 draw controls over the two wins, including a season-high 11 in the victory at George Mason. Both of MacDonald’s goals in the win against the Patriots came in transition and off of draw controls by URI. The midfielder was a major contributor in holding George Mason scoreless in the second quarter, and allowing just three goals in the second half to pull away with the victory. Entering the week, MacDonald had scored one goal and recorded one assist on the season and added five ground balls and two caused turnovers over Rhody’s 2-0 stretch.
