Rhode Island Wins Fifth Consecutive Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Rhode Island Rams collected a total of five gold medals to secure their fifth consecutive Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The Rams’ fifth-straight title was led by first-place victories by Most Outstanding Field Performer Matt Santy, Jarrett Young, Maddox Jordan and Theo Puterbagh.

Rhode Island won with 178.5 points led by Coach of the Year Trent Baltzell, his third consecutive A-10 honor. George Mason finished in second place with 121.5. The Patriots earned gold medals in the 4x400-meter relay, pole vault and 500-meter; and swept first, second and third place in the 60-meter hurdles.

VCU finished third with 92 points followed by Fordham (87), Massachusetts (85), Saint Joseph’s (76), Saint Louis (55.5), Loyola Chicago (47), La Salle (18), Davidson (12.5) and St. Bonaventure (5).

Three men’s records were broken on Saturday by Young, Most Outstanding Rookie Njam Abdul-Latif of Fordham and Most Outstanding Track Performer James Lawrence of Loyola Chicago.

Young, who broke the 400-meter A-10 record, won the event with a time of 47.33. Young’s new record surpassed the previous time set in 1999. Godot Gaskins of Massachusetts finished second in 47.65 and Ben Henry of Saint Joseph’s was third in 48.15.

Jordan narrowly defeated his URI teammate Antonio Capalbo for a win in the 800-meter. Jordan won in a time of 1:51.311, with Capalbo at 1:51.315. Josh Thaler of Saint Joseph’s placed third in 1:52.00.

After winning a gold medal on day one, Santy added another in the high jump. He won with a mark of 2.07 with VCU’s Jaiden Oglesby in second at 2.04M. Santy’s teammate Cam Miller placed third at 2.04M.

Puterbaugh secured the victory in the shot put at 16.96M with his teammate Christopher Tavarone finishing in second. Tavarone earned silver with a mark of 16.06M. Aiden Donovan of Massachusetts placed third with 15.95M.

The Patriots swept the 60-meter hurdles behind the first-place finish of Joshua Sutton at 8.10. His teammates Albert Asare (8.163) and Davian Burke (8.166) finished second and third respectively. GM’s Paul McClain also won the 500-meter (1:03.60) and the Patriots captured the 4x400-meter relay behind Mason Samuels, Lance Koontz, Max Karen and Aidan Walcott in 3:14.78.

Fordham earned gold medals behind Abdul-Latif in the 60-meter (6.806) and the new A-10 200-meter record (21.17), and Rodolfo Sanchez in the mile (4:09.46).

Saint Joseph’s won the 1,000-meter behind Will Rau (2:26.00) and the 4x800-meter relay. The Hawks’ 4x800 relay team was led by Tommy Silvester, Jayden Greene, Graham Phillips and Josh Thaler.

Other first place finishers include Lawrence in the 3,000-meter (8:03.53), which set an A-10 record, VCU’s David Coles in the triple jump (15.30M) and Jacob Brown of Massachusetts in the pentathlon (5,040).
