WASHINGTON -- Loyola Chicago graduate student James Lawrence and Rhode Island graduate student Ryan Tona were named Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Track and Field Performers of the Week, respectively. Tona’s teammate Josia Katroli was recognized as the Men’s Rookie of the Week.
Loyola Chicago graduate student Roisin Treacy collected A-10 Women’s Track Performer of the Week, while Richmond senior Molly Wise received Women’s Field Performer of the Week. Dayton freshman Simone Bessong was tabbed as Women’s Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Tuesday, are the first of the season and are for competitions from Dec. 1 to Dec. 7.
Lawrence opened his season with a historic performance at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, breaking Loyola’s men’s 5,000-meter school record. The Charlottesville, Va. clocked 13:32.15 in the invitational section, surpassing Ryan Martin’s 2022 mark and placing 16th overall in one of the nation’s strongest early-season distance fields. Lawrence’s 5,000-meter time ranks first in the conference and 22nd in Division I.
At the URI Heptathlon, Tona began the indoor season with a first-place finish, scoring a program-record 5,662 points. He finished fourth in the 60-meter (7.19s), first in the long jump (7.39m), second in the shot put (13.11m), first in the high jump (2.03m), first in the 60-meter hurdles (8.26s), first in the pole vault (4.70m) and third in the 1000-meter (2:56.68). The Smithtown, NY native’s heptathlon score ranks third in the nation.
At the Rhody Opener, Katroli earned silver in the high jump event. In the high jump, he recorded a clearance of 2.10 meters. Katroli, Lewiston, Maine native, holds the best mark in the high jump in the conference.
Treacy, a native of Ashford, Wicklow, Ireland, placed 13th in the 3,000-meter event, completing the race in 9:17.49. The time marked a seven-second personal best and moved her to No. 2 on Loyola’s all-time list. Treacy’s time ranks first in the conference and 27th in Division I.
Wise won the long jump with a personal best of 6.22 meters, breaking her previous program record of 6.15 meters. With her mark, Wise, the Harrodsburg, Ky. native, is currently ranked first in the conference and fifth in Division I in the long jump.
Bessong made history in her collegiate debut at the Tiger Open hosted by Wittenberg University. The Florence, KY native finished second in the 60-meter dash by running the third-fastest time in Dayton history at 7.48. Bessong was also part of the 4x200 relay team that broke the school record at 1:38.94. Her 60-meter time ranks first in the A-10 and 33rd in Division I.
