Fordham, St. Bonaventure Earn Weekly Under Armour Swimming and Diving Awards

WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference named Fordham graduate student David Vargas as its Under Armour Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, while his teammate Quinn MacPhail was named Rookie of the Week. Fordham junior Hayley Clark earned Under Armour Women’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week. Fordham freshman Ella Montgomery and St. Bonaventure freshman Sophie Baker shared Co-Rookie of the Week. The awards, which were announced on Tuesday, are for competitions from Nov. 3 to Nov. 9.  

Vargas, a Mexico City, Mexico native, claimed gold in both diving events in Fordham’s dual meet against Boston College. Vargas won both events with scores of 339.05 in the 1-meter and 378.95 in the 3-meter. Both scores rank second best in the conference.  

In the Rams meet at Boston College, MacPhail won both distance freestyle events. He claimed gold with season-best times of 9:22.95 in the 1,000-yard freestyle and 4:35.48 in the 500-yard freestyle. The Shaker Heights, Ohio native holds the second fastest 1000-free time in the A-10.  

Clark won three individual medals in Fordham’s team win over Boston College. She won the won the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.66), the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.53), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.00), which are all season-best times. Clark, a Chapel Hill, N.C. native, holds the third fastest time in the 200-free and fifth fastest for the 500-free.  

In the Rams' win over Boston College, Montgomery won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.63 seconds, while also posting a season-best time in the 100-yard backstroke. She placed second in the 100-back with a time of 57.32. The Lamoine, Maine native holds the tenth fastest time in the A-10 for the 100-back and 100-fly.  

Baker had a standout meet against Canisius, claiming first in the 100-yard backstroke (56.15) and 100-yard butterfly (58.09). The Canton, Ohio native swam the key legs on the 200-medley relay team and 200-yard freestyle relay teams; both of whom won gold. Baker’s 100-back time ranks sixth in the conference.
