WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference recognized Richmond junior Clara Larripa as its Under Armour Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week. VCU redshirt sophomore Emma Clements was named the Defensive Player of the Week, and her freshman teammate Angelina Gandos earned the Rookie of the Week honors. The awards were announced Monday and are for games played October 6-12.
Larripa led the Spiders last week with four points on two goals to earn the league’s offensive award for the second straight week. The midfielder from Buenos Aries, Argentina tallied her 11th goal of the season in a league matchup with Davidson, scoring in the 18th minute by executing a penalty corner play. Then in a non-conference game against Queens, Lainey Nichols drove to the circle and found Larripa for a diving shot past the goalkeeper. All five shots taken on the weekend were on goal.
Clements, a goalkeeper, made 11 saves and earned two road shutout wins, her fifth and sixth shutouts of the year. A Fredericksburg, Va., product, she made five saves in VCU's 1-0 win at No. 20 Saint Joseph's on Friday and followed it with six saves in VCU's 1-0 double overtime win at American on Sunday to claim her second A-10 Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
Gandos scored the game-winning goal in VCU's 1-0 road win at #20 Saint Joseph's on Friday. A defender from Montevideo, Uruguay, she scored the goal in the 51st minute following a penalty corner. Gandos also helped VCU earn two shutout wins on the weekend with another 1-0 win against American on Sunday.
