WASHINGTON – VCU junior Mathias Bondaz earned recognition as the Atlantic 10 Men’s Tennis Most Outstanding Performer while Dayton freshman Kyle McNally was voted A-10 Rookie of the Year. The league announced both awards, along with Coach of the Year, which was awarded to VCU’s Anthony Rossi, Tuesday.
The three superlative awards along with the All-Conference were voted on by the A-10 men’s tennis head coaches while the All-Academic team was selected by the tennis communications directors.
Bondaz, a product of Marseille, France, was ranked No. 41 nationally during the season and finished the year ranked No. 57. He posted a 6-3 record against ranked opponents, and a 17-4 record in singles this season playing at flight one or two. He also won nine doubles matches for the Rams at courts two and three. A three-time A-10 Player of the Week selection, Bondaz led VCU to its seventh straight A-10 title.
McNally hails from Algonquin, Ill. And recorded a 25-5 overall record this season, including an 18-3 mark in dual matches. Playing mostly at positions three and four, he had more wins in dual matches than any other Flyer and the second most wins on the team. He was a four-time A-10 Rookie of the Week honoree.
Rossi led VCU to its seventh straight league crown and the fifth in a row under his tutelage. This marks the fifth A-10 Coach of the Year honor for the French native. He led the Rams to a 16-10 overall record with wins over seven ranked teams, including No. 12 Mississippi State, No. 45 Liberty and No. 45 Florida Atlantic. The Rams finished ranked 38
th nationally this season under Rossi.
