VCU Claims Top A-10 Women’s Tennis Seed for 11th Straight Year

WASHINGTON – For the 11th straight year, VCU will be the No. 1 seed in the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. The league announced the seedings ahead of the 2024 championship, which begins Wednesday, April 24 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

Winners of eight of the last 10 A-10 Championships, the Rams (14-8) lock down one of three first-round byes. VCU is ranked 70th in the ITA team rankings with a 4-0 record versus other A-10 teams. The Rams will face the winner of the No. 8 Richmond / No. 9 George Washington matchup on Thursday at 4:30 pm.

Saint Louis (14-3) grabbed the No. 2 position and will also receive a bye, setting up a second-round match versus the winner between the No. 7 Dayton / No. 10 Duquesne on Thursday at 7:00 pm. The Billikens were 2-1 against other Atlantic 10 teams in the spring.

Massachusetts (12-7) slotted in at third for the final bye of the championship, and will face the victor of No. 6 Rhode Island and No. 11 St. Bonaventure on Friday at 11:30 am. The Minutewomen closed out the season winning four straight matches and were 4-1 versus A-10 foes this season.

The opening slate of championship matches starts Wednesday at 9:00 am with No. 8 Richmond (8-10) taking on No. 9 George Washington (6-14) and No. 4 Fordham (13-6) battling No. 13 George Mason (5-16). The 11:00 am matches feature No. 5 Davidson (12-9) squaring off against No. 12 Saint Joseph’s (4-17) and No. 6 Rhode Island (13-6) playing against No. 11 St. Bonaventure (8-14). No. 7 Dayton (10-9) and No. 10 Duquesne (7-12) close out the first round on Wednesday at 1:00 pm.
 
The winners of the Fordham/George Mason and Davidson/Saint Joseph’s matchups will face each other in Thursday’s quarterfinals at 4:30 pm

The semifinals are scheduled for Friday at 5:30 pm with the championship finale slated for Saturday afternoon at 5:30 pm. All rounds will be streamed through the USTA website's Playsight system, which allows viewers to select the court they wish to watch. Admission will be free for the A-10 Championships.
