VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Rhode Island won its 15th Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Indoor Track & Field title Saturday, finishing with 227 points and five event victories to secure the title, the fourth straight for the Rams.
George Mason placed second with 142 points, followed by VCU with 92. Saint Louis (62) and Massachusetts (60) completed the top five in team scoring.
Two records were set during Saturday’s competition, including a shared mark. Rhode Island’s Tristen Howard and Emmanuel Oche of VCU clocked a 6.73 in the men's 60 meter dash, earning a rare tie for the gold medal and league record by topping Rhody's Nigel Hill, who set the mark with a 6.75 in 2018.
La Salle’s Liam Rivard set a new record in 800 meters with a 1:48.80. Eli Baker of
Rhode Island also broke the record with a 1:50.77, earning silver and besting Blaine Lacey of George Mason, who set the mark of 1:50.95 in 2018.
Rhody also has Saturday event victories, led by Most Outstanding Track Performer Jarrett Young’s 21.43 in the 200 meters. Collin Ochs won the 1000 meters with a 2:26.38. Matthew Santy won the High Jump with a 2.07 meter leap. Christopher Tavarone was the shot put champion, throwing 16.98 meters. Rhody closed the meet with a Heptathlon win by Devin Donahue, who scored 5,315 points.
Rhode Island’s Trent Baltzell was voted A-10 Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
Patrick Fehm from Saint Joseph’s matched Santy’s High Jump of 2.07 meters, but Santy held the tiebreaker.
VCU’s John Casper won the Weight Throw on Friday with an A-10 Record toss of 21.76 meters and was third in the shot put on Saturday with a 15.85 meters to secure Most Outstanding Field Performer Accolades. A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie honors went to Darren Cammauf of Saint Joseph’s, who won the 500 meters with a 1:03.54.
George Mason’s Jarett Flaker was the 400 meter champion with a 47.99. Saint Louis’ Harrison Martinenko was the gold medalist in the mile run, setting a time of 4:07.28. Loyola Chicago’s Jason Clayton captured the 3000 meters with a 8:15.85, and his teammate Francois Guilhot established a time of 14:05.46 to win the 5000 meters. Davidson’s Isaac Bynum recorded an 8.13 in the 60 meter hurdles to win gold. Evan Bruenderman of Saint Louis had a triple jump of 15.27 meters to take the victory.
VCU won the 4x400 meter relay with a 3:13.52 and George Mason’s 7:32.80 in the 4x800 meters game the Patriots a victory.
