George Mason, Davidson, St. Bonaventure Secure Final Indoor Track & Field Weekly Awards

WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named George Mason junior Abigail Weening and senior Sola Omonije of Davidson its Women's Track and Field Performers of the Week. Mason sophomore Albert Asare and his junior teammate Arsalan Yaqubi were named Men’s Track and Field Performers. George Mason women’s freshman Brooke Gunter and St. Bonaventure men’s freshman Brendan Chapple were selected as Indoor Track & Field Rookies of the Week. The awards, the final of the season, were announced Wednesday, and are for meets held Feb. 12-18.
 
Weening of Barrie, Canada, competed in the Father Diamond Invitational and finished in first place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.89, which ranks sixth in the A-10.
 
In Davidson's final tune-up before next weekend's conference championships, Omonije won the high jump in her first-ever collegiate event at the USC Indoor Open. Omonije, who joined the Wildcats' track and field team in January after an All-Conference season in volleyball, was successful on her third attempt at 1.67m (5-05.75) to capture the title. This was the first track meet since high school for the native of The Colony, Texas.
 
Gunter, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., competed in the Father Diamond Invitational and finished in third place for the pole vault. She was able to get over 3.40m to achieve the third spot.
 
Asare, a Frederick, Md., product, finished in first place for two different running events. He captured first for the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.14 seconds and placing in all-time records list for Mason and sixth this year in the A-10. He also finished in first for the men's 200 meter race with a time of 22.50.
 
Arsalan finished in first place in the weight throw with a mark of 18.79 meters, good for third in the A-10 this year. The Springfield, Va., native also finished in first for the shot put achieving a mark of 15.24 meters, the seventh best throw this season in the league.
 
Chapple set his second school record in as many weeks, this one in the 1000 meters at Nazareth, also winning the event. Fresh off breaking the school's oldest standing record in the mile last weekend, The Waterloo, Ontario, product won the 1000m on Friday night with a winning time of 2:32.91. That effort surpassed the standing school record of 2:35.79 set at last year's A-10 Championships by Darion Gregory by almost three full seconds. Chapple had a full weekend as he also competed in the mile at Cornell on Saturday, jumping to sixth on the program leaderboard with a run of 4:27.87. He placed 13th out of 49 runners in Saturday's event.
