AMHERST, Mass. -- Rhode Island won the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship Sunday, it’s third straight and 15
th title overall. The Rams finished with 172 points at the championship, which concluded Sunday at the UMass Track & Field Complex.
The Rams collected 17 medals in 13 events, including three golds. Tristen Howard won the 100 meters with a 10.48. Derek Chalmers won the long jump with a 7.68 meter leap, and Lucas Frost took first in the javelin with a throw of 75.03 meter, which set a new meet record. Adam Dubois joined Frost as a medalist in the javelin with a 66.36 meter throw.
George Mason finished second with 148 points, followed by VCU with 138 in third place and Davidson in fourth with 105 points. Massachusetts (73), Saint Louis (47) and La Salle (40) rounded out the top half of the team standings.
The Patriots Micah Jones was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Rookie, finishing fourth in the long jump (7.35m) and third in the 100 meters (10.58). Mason also had gold medal track performances from Isaiah Carter, who clocked in at 21.24 in the 200 meters, Micah Harris in the 800 meters, with a time of 1:49.58, and the 4x400 meter relay team, which set a facility record with a time of 3:09.43. On the field side, the Patriots top finishers were Colton Ocetnik, who set a facility record in the pole vault with a 5.02 meter vault and Cason Gardner’s record-setting 7,393 points in the decathlon.
VCU’s Jaekob Vollbrecht became the first A-10 thrower to win the discus, hammer throw and shot put in the same outdoor meet, earning Most Outstanding Field Performer. He set a facility record in the hammer throw with a 60.74 meter toss, and established a meet record in the discus with a 57.48 throw. He won the shot put with a 17.84 meter heave. VCU also had event victories in the triple jump with David Coles’ 15.58 meter leap and the 4x100 meter relay team that equaled a facility record with a 40.60.
VCU’s Emmanuel Waller set a meet record in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 50.72. he was named Most Outstanding Track Performer as was Davidson’s Jayden Smith, who set a meet record in the 110 meter hurdles with a 13.42 time. Davidson’s Josh Hardin also won the 400 meters for the Wildcats with a time of 46.79, and Joe dosReis set a meet record in the 1,500 meters with a 3:44.26 time. Davidson also won the 4x800 meter relay with a 7:26.37.
Rhode Island coach Trent Baltzell won A-10 Men’s Coach of the Year honors. Other Rhody medalists included the 4x800 meter relay team (7:28.83, 2
nd), Ryan Tona and Devin Donahue (Decathlon – 6,926 and 6,501 points respectively), Johnathan Buchanan (Hammer – 59.81m, 2
nd), Alexander Baez (Hammer – 56.71m, 3
rd), Mason Brubaker (Pole Vault – 4.92m, 2
nd), Eric Zulkofske (3,000m Steeplechase – 9:13.00, 3
rd), Tyler Rubush (1,500m – 3:45.80, 3
rd), Jarrett Young (400m – 46.89, 2
nd AND 200m – 21.41, 2
nd), and Jolon O’Connor (200m – 21.49, 3
rd).
Other event winners included Dennis Manyeah of La Salle who captured the high jump with a 2.11 meter leap and Loyola Chicago’s Blake Buysse’s 10,000 meter time of 29:35.83. Toby Gillen of Saint Louis set a facility record in the 5,000 meters, and La Salle’s David Butts won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a 9:00.78.
