NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named VCU junior Matisse Bobichon it's Men's Tennis Performer of the Week, while Fordham freshman Dhillon Virdee-Oakley was named Rookie of the Week. On the women's side, VCU sophomore Yelizaveta Karlova earned Women's Tennis Performer of the Week, alongside Davidson freshman Savanna Kollock, the league's Rookie of the Week. The awards, announced Tuesday, are for matches played April 3-9.
Bobichon was a perfect 4-0 last week in two wins for VCU, playing in the top two positions in both singles and doubles. In the Rams' 6-1 victory against ETSU, Bobichon paired with Rayane Stable for a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles, before picking up a quick point with a 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Two days later, the Lyon, France, native played at No. 1 doubles with Maxence Bertimon, earning a 6-4 win en route to the doubles point against Charlotte. Bobichon, ranked No. 96 by the ITA, then clinched the match against the 49ers on the top singles court, 7-6 (4), 6-4.
Virdee-Oakley went 2-0 in both singles and doubles action on the week in a pair of Rams' victories. In singles action, the rookie from San Roque, Spain, opened the week with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Holy Cross' Camilo Illanes and then defeated Rider's Jaime de Jaraiz in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. He also teamed with fellow freshman Sampras Rakotondrainibe to win at third doubles over Holy Cross, 6-4, and Rider, 6-2.
Karlova earned a second consecutive Performer of the Week nod, adding a pair of victories to her season against East Carolina. The Almaty, Kazakhstan, product, paired with Emma Valletta for a decisive 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles. She then took down Martina Muzzolon at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2 for her ninth singles victory in dual play.
Kollock helped Davidson to an undefeated weekend, taking down Gardner-Webb, 4-3, and George Washington, 5-2. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native was perfect in both in singles and doubles action. On court four, Kollock defeated Valeria Lloclla of Gardner-Webb, 6-3, 6-3 then went on to capture an win over GW's Charlotte Webb, 6-2, 6-1 on court five. She also paired with Josie Schafer at No. 3 doubles, including the final match to claim the doubles point against the Colonials.
