Richmond, VCU, Fordham and Massachusetts Take Weekly Tennis Honors

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Richmond graduate student Alex Wernink and Fordham freshman Sampras Rakotondrainibe it's Men's Tennis Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively. On the women's side, VCU sophomore Anja Draskovic and Massachusetts freshman Melissa Senli earned Performer and Rookie laurels. The awards, announced Tuesday, are for matches played Jan. 30 – Feb. 5.

Wernink helped lead the Spiders to an undefeated 3-0 weekend with wins over Binghamton (4-0), Brown (4-3) and Army (4-0) in West Point. Playing at No. 6 singles, the graduate student from Glen Cove, N.Y., picked up a pair of straight-set victories. He also played with John Walsh at No. 2 doubles, winning each of their three matches.

Rakotondrainibe recorded the winning point in Fordham's 4-3 win over Fairfield last week. The rookie from Antananarivo, Madagascar, dropped the first set, 6-3, but came back to take the second, 6-1, and the third in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7) on court six, clinching the win for the Rams. Rakotondrainibe also provided the doubles point, teaming with Dhillion Virdee-Oakley for a 7-6 (3) victory.

Draskovic helped clinch the Rams' first win of the season against Marshall with a 7-5, 6-1 on court six. The Podgorica, Montenegro, native also paired with Emma Valletta on court three, striking first with a 6-1 victory before the Rams ultimately dropped the doubles point.

Senli went 4-0 on the week with triumphs over Siena and Fairfield. She partnered with Mariya Krasakova at No. 2 doubles, taking down their Siena opponents, 6-0, and their opponents from Fairfield, 6-3. At No. 1 singles, the Izmir, Turkey, product won 6-0, 6-1, over Siena, before defeating Fairfield, 6-1, 7-5.
