George Mason Leads Women’s, Men’s Field After First Day of Indoor Track & Field Championship

KINGSTON, R.I. — George Mason is leading both the women’s and men’s 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship following Saturday’s first day of competition at Rhode Island’s Mackal Field House.
 
The Patriots have a commanding lead on the women’s side with 68 points, more than double second-place VCU’s 33. La Salle has 28 points for third, followed by Davidson in fourth with 19 points and Richmond in fifth with 16 points. Duquesne (14) and Loyola-Chicago (14) shared sixth place after the six completed events. Massachusetts (12), Rhode Island (8), Dayton (7) and Saint Louis (7) were rounded out the top 10 respectively with the Flyers and Billikens sharing the 10th spot.
 
George Mason has 46 points in the men’s championship, followed by second-place Rhode Island with 42 points and third-place VCU with 31. League newcomer Loyola Chicago is in fourth with 19 points, followed by Saint Louis with 15.5 points (fifth place), Davidson with 13 points (sixth) and Saint Joseph’s with 11 (seventh). La Salle (9), Fordham (4.5) and UMass (4) completed the men’s top 10 team finishes respectively.
 
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • There was one record broken in the women’s championship, with the Richmond DMR team broke a nine-year old A-10 meet and URI facility record with an 11:34.45. The previous mark of 11:35.23 was set by Duquesne in 2014.
     
  • La Salle picked up two gold medal finishes. One by Eleanor Mancini won the 5,000 meters with a 16:28.62. Olabisi Adams was the long jump champion with a 5.91 leap.
     
  • Hannah Robertson of George Mason was the pole vault champion with a 3.77 M.
     
  • VCU’s Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir finished first in the weight throw with a 20.03 M toss.
     
  • Duquesne’s Emily Brozeski scored 3,629 points in the pentathlon to win gold, finishing first in the shot put and second in the long jump.
 
MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS
  • There were two records broken Saturday on the men’s side. Davidson set a new A-10 Championship DMR mark with a 9:50.07, surpassing a record set by GW and tied last year by Davidson of 9:56.25.The mark also set a new Mackal Field House record, topping GW’s 9:56.46 record from 2018.
     
  • Rhode Island’s Jonathan Buchanan set the other men’s record Saturday in the weight throw. Buchanan won gold with his toss of 20.49 M. This bested the previous mark of 20.45 M set by VCU’s Will Schwartz in 2020. Buchanan also beat his own facility record of 21.03 M set earlier this year.
     
  • Toby Gillen of Saint Louis won the 5,000 M with a time of 14:13.89.
     
  • The pole vault champion was George Mason’s Colton Ocetnik with a 4.86 M vault. His teammate, Cason Gardner, currently leads the heptathlon with three events to go. Gardner won the high jump, the long jump and the 60 M in the heptathlon.
     
  • VCU’s Lamar Davis took gold in the long jump with a 7.38 M.
 
The championship concludes Sunday with events beginning at 9: 00 am. The final events are slated for a 3:10 pm start, with the awards ceremony beginning at 4:00 pm.
