A-10 Releases Weekly Tennis Awards, Honors VCU, Bona, Richmond, Rhody Student-Athletes

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Atlantic 10 Conference selected Richmnd junior Andrea Campodonico as the league's Women's Tennis Performer of the Week while Rhode Island freshman Nikki Fernando earned Rookie of the Week honors. On the Men's side, VCU graduate student Charles Bertimon garnered Men's Tennis Performer of the Week with St. Bonaventure freshman Archie Graham taking home the Rookie laurels. The awards, announced Tuesday, are for matches played Feb. 13-19.

Campodonico led the Spiders to a 5-2 victory over Eastern Carolina on Saturday. In doubles action, Campodonico paired with Polina Shitikova at top doubles for a 6-2 victory. In singles, the Asuncion, Paraguay, product defeated Ines Bachir, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 (1) on court two.

Fernando won both of her singles matches on the week, beating her opponent in straight sets each time. The Kihei, Hawaii, native opened the week with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Providence's Mae Abreau at No. 5 singles on Friday afternoon before later claiming victory at No. 4 singles against Quinnipiac's Jordan Bradley, 6-4, 6-0. Fernando and fellow freshman Priyanka Shanker paired up for a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Quinnipiac. Fernando improved to 6-3 in singles play and 9-6 in doubles action. 

Bertimon went undefeated last week in a pair of 6-1 victories against Old Dominion and George Mason. Against the Monarchs, Charles and brother Maxence battled back for a No. 2 doubles victory against No. 36 Younes Lalami and Luca Madoner, 6-4, before winning a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Hailing from Champagne Sur Seine, the French import then made quick work in doubles against George Mason's top pair, 6-1, before netting his final victory of the week at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.

Graham captured victories in both singles and doubles to help the Bonnies to a shutout win over Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday afternoon. Graham teamed up with Rasmus Egehus to help the Bonnies take the doubles point with a 6-2 victory at the No. 1 spot. The rookie from Bath, England, followed that with a straight-set win at the top flight in singles action, 6-3, 6-2.
